ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHLEY MOODY
World Elder Abuse Day Educates on Human Rights
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15, Attorney General Ashley Moody highlighted efforts to protect Florida seniors. Attorney General Moody’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit investigates allegations of patient abuse, neglect and exploitation in facilities receiving payments under the Medicaid program, such as nursing homes, organizations for the mentally and physically disabled, and assisted living centers. Since 2019, MFCU investigations have resulted in the arrests of 41 suspects in cases involving the abuse, exploitation, or neglect of Florida seniors.
Attorney General Ashley Moody said, “Protecting vulnerable Floridians is a mission close to my heart and I am proud of the work my Medicaid Fraud Control Unit investigators do to stop patient abuse, exploitation, and neglect. Their work not only stops the ongoing mistreatment of seniors, but it also prevents future atrocities by bringing to justice criminals who take advantage of defenseless Floridians.”
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day serves as a call to action for individuals, organizations and communities working to end elder abuse, including financial exploitation, neglect, and scams.
Attorney General Moody’s MFCU works toward this mission in cases involving the Medicaid program. Generally speaking, instances of abuse outside the Medicaid program fall under the jurisdiction of local law enforcement, who work in close partnership with MFCU.
Below are a few examples of cases:
To report an abuse situation, individuals may use the Florida Abuse Hotline by calling 1(800) 96-ABUSE, or report online at the Florida Department of Children and Families Abuse Hotline webpage.
Additionally, Attorney General Moody’s Consumer Protection Division and Senior Protection Team work to stop scams and fraud targeting older Floridians. The teams have recovered millions of dollars through legal actions involving scams aimed at Florida seniors.
Help for Parents on Social Media Drug Sales to Kids
This week, the Attorney General issued a warning for parents—drug dealers are using social media to sell dangerous, sometimes deadly substances to kids. Minors may be increasingly susceptible to these digital dealers during the summer, when they have more free time to spend online.
Using some of the most popular apps to target children, these digital dealers claim to have prescription opioids for sale, but they often deliver counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl instead.
Just two milligrams of fentanyl are enough to kill a full-grown adult. The scary part is users often have no idea what they are taking, and too many parents have found out too late that just one pill can kill.
The AG has released Fast Facts on Fentanyl Toolkit to help parents keep their children safe. The kit is full of information highlighting the dangers of synthetic opioids and how drug dealers operate.
For example, dealers may use emoji codes to conduct illicit transactions. Here are some of the more common drug codes:
- Prescription Drugs: 💊🅿️ 🍫
- Dealer Advertising: 💰🔌🍁
- Cocaine: ❄️⛄🔑
- Marijuana: 💨🌲🔥
Parents should use the toolkit as a conversation starter with their kids about the risks of drug abuse. For more information about opioid misuse, visit DoseOfRealityFL.com.
CONGRESSMAN BILL POSEY
President Donald Trump Endorses Bill Posey to Fight for Florida
President Donald Trump issued a strong public endorsement of Conservative Congressman Bill Posey, who represents Florida’s 8th Congressional District and has been one of the biggest advocates for conservative values and government accountability in Congress.
“Congressman Bill Posey is doing a phenomenal job for the incredible people of Florida’s 8th Congressional District! A Conservative Warrior, Bill has consistently fought to uphold the rule of law, grow our economy, defend the second amendment, support our veterans and law enforcement, and drain the swamp,” said President Trump.
“It is a true honor to have the support and endorsement of President Trump,” said Posey. “While working together to serve the people of the United States, President Trump and I championed policies that put America first. Now, I am proud to continue our work and fight the good fight for our great nation.”
Posey Legislation Deputizes States to Enforce Border Laws
Working with Attorney General Ashley Moody, Congressman Posey has introduced legislation to allow state officials to force the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security to enforce immigration laws or deputize state officials to carry out their federal immigration duties. Posey has been a strong advocate of enforcing our laws and securing our borders from human traffickers, drug smugglers and other violent criminals seeking access to our communities.
According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, since President Biden took office, the amount of fentanyl seized at the border is enough to kill every man, woman and child in the nation more than seven times over and has become the number one killer of adults aged 18-45 with Mexico being the main source. If the federal government won’t enforce our border laws, states have a duty to protect their citizens, said Posey. Other Posey initiatives to secure our borders include:
-
Introduced Border Wall Trust Fund Act (H.R. 416), enabling Americans to contribute to border wall/fence construction.
-
Ending the Visa Lottery Program which gives out 50,000 lottery entry visas a year regardless of skills or affiliations (H.R. 413)
-
Deporting criminal aliens (H.R. 2003)
-
Original cosponsor of the Secure the Southern Border Act to reinstate and make law the successful Trump era immigration policies that secured our border and reduced the flow of immigrants at our southern border to a trickle.
Posey’s Bipartisan Supply Chain Initiative Advances
Bipartisan legislation introduced by Congressman Posey to strengthen American manufacturing supply chain resilience and reduce our dependence on foreign powers like China for critically needed products advanced through the House. The bill establishes a nonpartisan commission tasked with studying the U.S. critical supply chain, identifying its vulnerabilities, predicting future supply-chain disruptions, and guiding Congress on meeting critical supply-chain needs and mitigating dependence on foreign powers like China.
SENATOR MARCO RUBIO
Rubio Gains Law Enforcement Endorsement
Sen. Marco Rubio again bested his opponent Democratic Rep. Val Demings' effort to highlight her police background when he announced Friday, he’d received the endorsement of the Florida Fraternal Order of Police in their U.S. Senate contest.
The endorsement, made in Demings’ backyard in Lake Buena Vista, is yet another that Rubio has landed from law enforcement ranks. It followed endorsements of the Police Benevolent Association, 55 Florida Sheriffs, and the Florida Police Chiefs Association.
Demings' campaign has been running statewide TV ads lauding her 27 years as an Orlando cop, including almost four as Orlando Police Chief.
Rubio Vows to Block White House Push for Abortion ‘Public-Health Emergency’
Sen. Marco Rubio warned Friday that he will fight any attempt by the Biden administration to declare a “public-health emergency” on abortion after the Supreme Court rules on a challenge to Roe v. Wade.
President Biden has indicated that he may use executive orders to circumvent red state moves to restrict abortion, depending on how the high court rules on a pending case. Among the moves eyed by the White House reportedly includes the declaration of a public-health emergency to preserve access to abortion.
