La version française suivra.

Egale Canada has signed the global statement requesting the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council to renew the mandate of the Independent Expert on violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity (IE SOGI). The mandate, which was first created in 2016, comes up for renewal every three years. While in 2019, it enjoyed increased support from the Human Rights Council, the situation this year is very different, and your support is needed.

The IE SOGI assists the UN in listening to the 2SLGBTQI community and taking measures against abuse and prejudice. The current session of the Human Rights Council will decide on the renewal of this mandate.

Over the years, the IE SOGI has given voice to the realities of the 2SLGBTQI community and has prompted authorities in several countries to action.

Here are some of the selected works by the IE SOGI over the years

  1. "Conversion therapies" practices https://www.ohchr.org/en/calls-for-input/reports/2020/report-conversion-therapy

  1. Report on Gender Theory https://www.ohchr.org/en/calls-for-input/reports/2021/report-gender-theory

  1. Right to health and SDG3 https://www.ohchr.org/en/calls-for-input/call-inputs-report-un-human-rights-council-realisation-right-persons-affected

It is an opportunity for the HRC to renew the mandate of IE SOGI. We all must do our part in making this a reality.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Help make this renewal possible. Ask your organization to join hundreds of others to participate by signing the global statement for renewal of the mandate  - https://bit.ly/3aSkMjf

  1. Talk to your representatives, reach out to your diplomats and share the importance of the IE SOGI for the 2SLGBTQI community.

  1. Spread the word and get communities and allies to join the call for renewal.

------
