Friend,
Today, for the first time, our nation honors Juneteenth with a federal holiday observing the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans. It’s been a long time coming but it’s far from enough.
This Juneteenth, it’s not enough to commemorate the end of slavery, we must pause to reflect on the racist history of our country and how far we still have to go to truly achieve racial equity.
I joined the board of Ruth’s List because the only way to achieve equality is by ensuring Black women are in positions of power, whether that’s in government or corporate America. We need leaders young Black girls can see themselves in, so they feel there is no mountain too high to climb and no glass ceiling is unbreakable.
In honor of Juneteenth, I’m proud to highlight 19 Black women candidates endorsed by Ruth’s List this year who are making history and breaking down barriers.
If we are to truly have representative government, we must commit ourselves to electing Black women to various levels of state and local government in Florida. Let’s keep building a diverse bench and ensuring everyone has a seat at the table.
Happy Juneteenth,
Lindsay Pollard
