Today, Colorado celebrates Juneteenth for the first time as an official state holiday. In so doing, we celebrate freedom, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. That end, however, did not conclude our nation’s work to ensure equal justice for all. As Dr. King put it in his “I Have a Dream'' speech, our Declaration of Independence’s call for equality for all was a promissory note that has yet to be cashed.
The story of our nation includes both the commitment to equal justice and the hard work of delivering on that commitment. The arc of that work depends on all of us. My religious tradition tells me, “you don’t have the obligation of completing the work of repairing our world, but you are not free to desist from doing your part.” This teaching calls me to do my part as your AG to fulfill our promissory note, which includes protecting voting rights, ensuring a fair criminal justice system, and standing up to those who commit hate crimes.
We each have a part to play to ensure equal justice for all. On Juneteenth, we can and should celebrate progress, as when I marched this past Saturday with supporters, friends, and neighbors. We also must stay vigilant to meet our destiny and live up to the promise declared in our Declaration of Independence: we all are created equal and have the unalienable rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
