In the mid-1990s, I was teaching at Mankato West High School. One day, a group of students asked if I'd be willing to help them start the school's first gay-straight alliance. They were concerned about the anti-LGBTQ bullying they'd seen and wanted to do something about it.

My answer was, "absolutely." As a teacher, I felt that it was my responsibility to be an ally and do what I could to make sure every student felt safe and comfortable at school.

I think about that day every year during Pride Month. And even though we've made a lot of progress since the 1990s, I know the work is not over. But my promise is this: I'll never back down until it is.
