Dear advocates and community members,
One hundred and fifty-seven years ago, on June 19, 1865, enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, received news that the Civil War was over. They were free.
Juneteenth thus became a symbolic date representing African American freedom.
Today we celebrate Juneteenth - Freedom Day.

Today is a day of reflection and renewed hope. It is a day of listening and a day to pray for peace and equity for all. We continue to see the consequences of systemic racism and discriminatory policies that disproportionately harm the Black community. From Emmett Till to Sandra Bland, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, and all the lives lost - the legacy of slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, the War on Drugs, and mass incarceration remains alive and it must be addressed.
We must do better.

“Congress needs to pass [the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act]. It will be much better off if they did. I hope everybody running for Congress is asked if they would support the George Floyd Act.” - Keith Ellison, Minnesota Attorney General

That’s why today we are asking for more than just words. We are asking for action.
While we are aware that these issues cannot be fixed by any one person or organization, Emgage Action is more dedicated than ever to empowering voters, advocating for real policy changes, and supporting the right candidates for public office to sustain meaningful and long-lasting change towards racial justice. That’s why we support candidates based on their values and based on the changes they seek to make.
Our voices must be louder than the hatred.
In solidarity,
Wa'el Alzayat
