Meteorologist and Democratic candidate for Congress in IL-17, Eric Sorensen here.
I was on air for 20 years on the highest rated program (in both Rockford and the Quad Cities). When I say ‘highest rated,’ I mean that we had the most viewers. Our weather segments were often one of the most watched hours of the day. Some would say it’s because of my charm and positive attitude. Others would say I got the weather right EVERY day. But it’s probably because people appreciated the scientific perspective I brought to talking about weather and climate change! Oh, and I was fun, very fun.
Because our viewership was high, the TV stations were able to sell a LOT of ads in the time I worked there. Here’s how it works: TV is sold by the ‘point’ and shows can charge more points each time an ad plays depending on their number of viewers (you may have heard of ‘Nieson ratings’ - this is where they come in). While candidates get the cheapest rates on TV, rates are being driven up by the governor’s race, meaning we’re paying more than ever every time our ad plays. I know this is a lot of detail, but as your Congressman, it’s my duty to over communicate!
It’s funny how I’ve gone from the one “selling TV ads” to the one who’s buying them. And let me tell you, I know the power of TV. TV has the ability to tell a story, to both convey a message and a feeling. It has the power to connect people. I mean here’s our ad, what do you think: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/forecast
Friend, for the first time in this campaign we’re being outspent on TV. To reclaim the advantage, we’re rushing a final buy early this week. Whatever you’re able to donate will go directly to keeping our ad up on the air, which is how we win.
If you've saved payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
