John, today is Juneteenth, a day when we commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

Juneteenth is an occasion both for celebration and for remembrance. We will never know the loss and suffering that occurred in the two and a half years between the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and this day in 1865, when the last slaves in Galveston, Texas were freed. This day serves as a reminder that mourning is inextricably linked with celebrating victories in the fight for racial justice in the United States.

So today, I am reminding myself of the responsibility we all have in the continued fight for racial equality. I will renew my willingness to fight, and I will refuse to let fear stop me. I invite you to join me in honoring the progress our nation has made since its founding and reflecting on the challenging and necessary work we have ahead of us as we strive for greater equality.
