Dear John ,
Happy Juneteenth y’all!
Today we celebrate the rich history and innumerable contributions that our people — BLACK PEOPLE — have made to this country.
As a young Black woman in America, I’ve grown up watching our government fail to deliver on its centuries’ old promise of freedom, justice and equality for our people.
Our history is a history of Black survival DESPITE centuries of legalized oppression.
It is a history of black excellence DESPITE institutionalized racism.
With every challenge thrown our way, we’ve fought back and we will never stop fighting until that promise for freedom, justice and equality is delivered.
The lives of Black Americans in Illinois’ 7th Congressional District are like the lives of so many Black Americans across this country. Defunded public schools. Food deserts. Rampant inequality. I’m fighting so that we can raise children in communities with clean air & water, grocery stores, quality education, free and accessible healthcare, and union jobs.
It’s the future I’m fighting for because it’s the future every single one of us in this country deserves.
For freedom, justice and equality for all our people.
In Solidarity,
Kina Collins
