Friend,
On June 19th, 1865, Gordon Granger, a Union Army general arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the end of slavery outlined in President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation issued more than two years prior. Backed by 2,000 Union troops, General Granger marched across the city reading aloud the order informing Texans that all slaves were free.
This was a momentous day not only for newly freed slaves in Texas, but a triumph for our nation. Celebrations marking this important day began across the nation in the years that followed, and as of last year, Juneteenth is now recognized as a federal holiday.
As we celebrate today, we must never forget that slavery is a stain on our nation. And we must acknowledge that Black people face challenges their white counterparts do not have to endure. Black people face barriers to accessing affordable health care, racial profiling, are incarcerated at higher rates, and face more economic hardships. We must continue fighting to ensure everyone has a fair shot to get ahead, regardless of the color of their skin.
The only way we confront the challenges we face today is by remembering the challenges our nation has overcome on our journey to becoming a more perfect union. As Americans, we must be emboldened by our history of overcoming the challenges we are facing. With grit and determination, we can work to root out injustices in our nation, just like the freedom fighters of years past.
I hope you will join me in celebrating this important day, and continuing the fight to ensure equality and justice for all.
