Today, we acknowledge and celebrate Juneteenth. Juneteenth is a significant day for the African American community, commemorating the freedom of the last remaining group of enslaved African Americans in Galveston, TX, on June 19, 1865.

This is not just a national holiday; it is not just a vacation day. Juneteenth is a cultural day of freedom for the African American community at-large. In all the excitement and symbolic change, it’s critical to respect and honor what is sacred to your neighbors. Here are 4 ways to show support to the Black community on this day and beyond:

• Acknowledge Juneteenth as a holiday in honor of the freeing of enslaved Africans
• Be a vocal and active supporter of equal opportunity
• Donate to local Black-owned organizations and buy from Black businesses
• Support and elect more Black lawmakers who understand the needs of our community

As an African American descendant of slaves, I am proud to be BLACK. But the fight we still have to do toward inclusion is a daily reminder that more is needed than just recognition. There needs to be action.

I’m here to tell you that the lasting impacts of the limitations placed on Black success can still be felt throughout our community today. Without a collective fight for equity, our state and nation cannot thrive. I'm sending love and solidarity to my community, on this day and every day.
