Dear Immigration Equality family,

Last year, Juneteenth became a federal holiday, a commemoration of the day that enslaved black people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom. That was on June 19th, 1865—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The following year, black families in Texas celebrated their own Independence Day.

Black communities have celebrated Juneteenth for over 150 years, but nationwide awareness of the day’s significance was forged more recently. In June 2020, amidst the mass anguish and protests following the killing of George Floyd, Juneteenth stood out as a rallying cry for racial justice.
Immigration Equality heeded the call and renewed our commitment to racial justice. We continue to follow the lead of black and POC-led organizations in this work. We hope you’ll join us in supporting the following initiatives with a donation in honor of Juneteenth 2022:

Caribbean Equality Project
Community-based organization that empowers, advocates for, and represents Black and Brown, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender non-conforming, and queer Caribbean immigrants in New York City. The organization's work focuses on advocacy for LGBTQ+ and immigrant rights, gender equity, racial justice, immigration and mental health services, and ending hate violence in the Caribbean diaspora.

Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project (BLMP)
Builds and centers the power of Black LGBTQIA+ migrants to ensure the liberation of all Black people through community-building, political education, creating access to direct services, and organizing across borders. BLMP is an independent organization that is fiscally sponsored by Transgender Law Center.

For the Gworls
Black, trans-led collective that curates parties to fundraise money to help Black transgender people pay for their rent, gender-affirming surgeries, smaller co-pays for medicines/doctor’s visits, and travel assistance.

Thank you, and Happy Juneteenth!
