John,

Yesterday, I joined the Democratic Party of Oregon's Black Caucus and hundreds of community members to celebrate Juneteenth.

Now a state and federal holiday, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States, while also celebrating the freedom, dignity, and contributions made by Black Americans.

In Oregon, a beloved community leader named Clara Peoples organized the first Juneteenth celebration in the Portland shipyards in 1945. In 1972, she helped bring forth Portland’s first official Juneteenth parade and public celebration.

I want to thank her family and all of the community leaders who have carried on this tradition for decades, including coordinating this year's 50th anniversary. What an inspiring, joyful weekend in communities all across our state.

Let today be a reminder of the importance of the fight for freedom and human dignity — and a recognition that it's up to all of us to keep fighting every day for real equality, real justice, and real opportunities for success for everyone.

Thank you, and I hope you have a Happy Juneteenth!

Tina
