Friends,

Today, we come together to celebrate Juneteenth, when in 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned that the Emancipation Proclamation had freed them two years prior.

Today is a celebration of that milestone in Black freedom and of the progress that we’ve made toward the ideals of freedom and equality for all.

It’s also a time for reflection and recommitment to the work that still must be done.

Too many barriers still exist for Black Americans - whether in healthcare or housing, education or the environment, voting rights or the criminal justice system. That’s why for Juneteenth, we both celebrate our independence and recommit to our fight for equity and justice for all.

I’ve dedicated my career to championing communities in Maryland that are too often forgotten and I've fought for policies to close gaps in opportunity and access to resources. In Congress, I sponsored the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to address the systemic injustices facing Black and Brown Americans.

As Attorney General, I’ll continue to defend the rights of Marylanders, advocate for long-overdue reforms to our justice system, and ensure that equity and fairness are central in how we effectively carry out the laws of our state.

So today, let’s all take this moment to celebrate true freedom, then let’s get back to work to make this nation a more perfect union. If you’d like to take action now, consider making a contribution to the NAACP to support their work today. [[link removed]]
