Democrats Silent on Violence Against the Pro-Life Community
As we await the decision on Dobbs v. Jackson, the pro-life community has increasingly become the victim of violent attacks. Jane's Revenge, an extremist pro-abortion group, has declared open season on all pro-life pregnancy centers. They've already destroyed property and firebombed centers in New York, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. A man even tried to murder Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in his home! And yet, the Left is refusing to denounce these acts of violence.
With the stunning silence from my Democrat colleagues and this Administration, I joined my colleagues in sending a letter to Attorney General Garland to find out if they are investigating these attacks and what their plan is to prevent similar attacks. I am hopeful for a quick response and swift action.
This Week in Ag
Last week, the House considered H.R. 7606, the Lower Food and Fuel Costs Act. While I have long-supported many parts of this legislation, but the Democrats attached those pieces to a poison pill that would create a duplicative and unnecessary meat and poultry special investigator.
The investigator would be granted "independent litigation authority" allowing them carte blanche power to file civil suits against packers at the whims of the Secretary without any coordination with the Department of Justice - a longstanding practice required under current law. The Packers and Stockyards Division already has enforcement tools at their disposal to address uncompetitive behavior in the meatpacking sector.
This legislation perpetuates the Biden Administration's tired narrative of blaming industry for fractured supply chains and historic inflation. It ignores industry requests for additional resources to fully fund USDA's current investigative and enforcement efforts. And, it undermines DOJ's longstanding role as the litigation arm of the federal government.
It also lacks support from those it is trying to help. The American Farm Bureau Federation has also raised several concerns and unanswered questions, while it is opposed outright by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, National Pork Producers Council, National Chicken Council, and the National Turkey Federation.
Because of these issues, I spoke against this legislation. You can watch my full statement during the Rules Debate here.
