John,

Today is a day of celebration and reflection for many of us in the Black community who descended from ancestors who were formerly enslaved.

As we celebrate the joy of liberty today — we are also reminded that the Black community’s fight for justice and equity is still not over.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve put forth legislation to bring justice to the Black community — including addressing unverified police raids, unfair insurance and home lending practices, and human trafficking in our state. But there is still a lot of work to be done here in Illinois and in this country.

I hope you’ll join me in celebrating this Freedom Day, our rich culture, and our accomplishments as a community. Juneteenth was the first step towards true freedom - it’s up to us to keep going until we achieve true justice.

Happy Juneteenth,

Jacqui Collins
