Hi there,
On June 19, 1865 – exactly 157 years ago today – the last enslaved African Americans in the United States learned of their freedom. While the Emancipation Proclamation was issued two years prior, the news of freedom was withheld from enslaved people in Galveston, Texas until 1865.
The holiday, later to become known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day, commemorates the end of slavery and honors the progress towards equity and justice that we’ve collectively made in America. But, while we have made tremendous progress towards justice, we still have a long, long way to go.
So while we celebrate the strides we’ve made towards a more perfect union, today we must also recommit ourselves to the fight for a more equitable and just world.
We need to come together to dismantle the systemic injustices that have oppressed Black people for centuries on end. We need to elevate the voices of those still crying out for justice and equal rights, and fight alongside them. And, we need to place more Black people in positions of leadership and power to ensure full representation in every room where decisions are being made.
It is not lost on me that, if I am elected this November, I will be the first Black woman to ever represent NY-02 in the halls of Congress. I often think about what it will mean for children of every background to see themselves in positions of leadership and know that anything is possible for them. Every day, I stand on the shoulders of all those who came before me, as I strive to create a better nation for those who will come after me.
So, again, this Juneteenth, let us all reaffirm our steadfast commitment to the fight for freedom and equality for all in this country. Because no one can be truly free until all of us are free.
Take care and walk good,
Jackie
