Hey there, friends. All of us here at the Montana Dems wanted to wish you a Happy and celebratory Juneteenth today.

Today we celebrate the official emancipation of enslaved African-Americans on June 19, 1865. It seems so long ago, but the reverberations are still being felt today, and there is still so much we can do to reach racial equality. President Joe Biden took a step in the right direction by making Juneteenth a federal holiday last year.

Yet here in Montana, Juneteenth is observed statewide but is not an official statewide holiday. We must be vigilant in working to make this day recognized and officially observed, as it is an incredibly important day in our nation’s history and in the history of our black citizens.
