Team – Happy Juneteenth to all!

Each year, on June 19th, we commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. On this day in 1865, thousands of people still living in slavery were finally made aware of their freedom – which had been declared two years prior in the Emancipation Proclamation – by Union soldiers who arrived in Galveston, Texas to make the announcement of the end of the war and, of course, the end of slavery.

Juneteenth is a time to celebrate Black culture, progress, and freedom. But, it’s also a time when we remember our nation’s history, the injustices of our past, and consider the lingering effects of injustice on today’s society. As allies to the Black community, it’s a time to educate ourselves, have the difficult but important conversations, and a time to consider what changes are yet to be made and how we as Americans, New Mexicans, and people can contribute to a more equal tomorrow.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. But, it wasn’t until last year that Juneteenth was declared a national holiday. This year, with all the pieces finally in place, I am beyond excited that we finally get to celebrate this momentous occasion with friends and family.

This is such an important moment, and I sincerely hope that you will join me in celebrating and commemorating all that it means and represents.
