John -
Today marks 157 years since the news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which ended slavery in the United States, finally reached the remaining enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas — two and a half years after it was issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
There have been many collective actions to advance equality and justice for African Americans since that day. And there is still much more work to do.
We face a remarkable opportunity to make history here in 2022 — to acknowledge the hardships and indignities suffered by my ancestors but to assure them that their sacrifices were not in vain. In the ancestors’ despair, they were also believers that one day we would live in an America where opportunity is available to all.
That we are pushing for a fairer, more just America and where we elect people who look like all of North Carolina. This election, and all the many ways we work to make North Carolina stronger, we recommit ourselves to fighting for and standing up for the promise of our nation – that all Americans, regardless of race, gender, class, or creed, have the opportunity for prosperous, safe, and healthy lives.
We fight for civility, honor, and dignity and a nation of courage and integrity. Thank you for being with me in this fight.
