Florida Senate Democrats want to wish everyone a happy Juneteenth.
This holiday holds incredible significance for our nation and our state. Today, we commemorate the end of slavery over 150 years ago when the enslaved people of Texas finally learned they were now free — and we also celebrate the progress we’ve since made in the fight for equality and justice.
While today is a celebration, here in Florida, we can’t ignore the ongoing effort to erase Black history — and the history of racial inequality and injustice in our country. We can’t ignore the ongoing effort to keep schools and companies from addressing inequality, or the Governor’s work to silence Black voices through unfair, anti-democratic Congressional maps.
So today, we celebrate the end of slavery. We celebrate our progress. But we also acknowledge that systemic racism and injustice are real, present threats to our communities — and that it’s up to us to take action and fulfill the promise of equal justice for all.
Florida Senate Democrats are ready to fight for freedom, equality, and justice. But it’s going to take ALL of us to live up to that goal.
So we hope you’ll join us in celebrating Juneteenth today, and we ask that you continue to stand with us in the fight for equality every day.
