Hey John,

I want to take some time today to talk about Juneteenth and why we celebrate it.

On today’s date in 1865, Union soldiers issued General Order No. 3, which informed Texans that all enslaved persons were free. Today we not only celebrate the freeing of Black slaves on this day, but we also celebrate and recognize the resilience and the solidarity within the Black community.

This day has been celebrated every year since then and is one of the longest-running celebrated holidays in our country’s history. In North Carolina, we’ve officially recognized this holiday since 2007, and now that it has become a federal holiday, we recognize the 19th day of June each year as Juneteenth National Freedom Day.

Take time and celebrate today as it is. A celebration of liberation and a celebration of solidarity and perseverance.

Have a great Juneteenth celebration,

Wiley
