Hi John,
I wanted to reach out today to commemorate Juneteenth. On this day in 1865, the last enslaved people in the Confederacy were freed – two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and months before ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment barring slavery in the United States once and for all.
This day is so important because it reminds us of the journey we’ve taken as a nation to live up to our values of freedom, liberty, and prosperity for all. Emancipation itself did not lead to full citizenship: it took a century for full voting rights for Black Americans to become a reality. Although we have come a long way, we still have a ways to go, with far too many left behind.
And that fight is at the heart of my campaign’s commitment to our common good. I promise that when I’m in Congress, I will be a fierce advocate for all Americans.
This weekend, I’m honored to attend Juneteenth celebrations in Beaver Falls, McKees Rocks, and Sewickley.
Thank you for your time,
Chris Deluzio
