Friend,

June 19, 1865, is an important day in history that not many people remember. On that day, federal troops arrived in Texas to announce that enslaved people were free in the United States.

This day is now known as Juneteenth, a day to commemorate and honor the end of slavery in the United States. It’s also a critical day to celebrate the progress we have made and recognize what still lies ahead as we continue to fight for equality.

This is an important day for us to reflect on the work we still have to do in order to protect Black Americans. On this historic day, we cannot stop the work we are doing to make sure our country is equitable and just.

Today, I am taking time to listen, learn, and commit to the work ahead. Juneteenth is an opportunity to continue educating ourselves on our history and reflect on our roles in the fight for racial justice.

I invite you to join me in a day of reflection and self-education as we consider our responsibility to each other and the progress we still need to make as a community.

Let’s work together to create an equitable future based on the ideas of liberty and justice that our nation was founded on.

Thank you for being on my team,

Debbie
