John,

It’s Juneteenth and it’s the first time our nation celebrates the emancipation of all enslaved Black people as a Federal Holiday.  AT DPN, we’re honoring Juneteenth by continuing the tradition  of Black freedom building.  We are also remembering that the story of this holiday is the story of freedom deferred. Just as Black people wouldn’t see the end of that chattel of slavery for another two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, today Black people are still sitting in Men’s Central Jail, a jail that the Los Angeles Board Supervisors voted to close over a year ago.  In 2022, the corrupt Los Angeles Sheriff's department will spend $3.3 billion in taxpayer dollars on policing and jails. That is more than 5 times what we will spend on homeless services, subsidized child care, and county parks combined.

Dignity and Power NOW is working to bring true abolition to our communities. We are fighting for pretrial reform, mental health services, and care not cages. On this Juneteenth, we are still fighting for liberation and we need your help.

Join the struggle for freedom. Celebrate Juneteenth by making a gift to Dignity and Power NOW.  Honor our ancestors and invest in a better Los Angeles for our children.

Let Freedom Ring,

Mark-Anthony Clayton-Johnson
