O Christmas Tree

What to Know: In Michigan, Christmas tree demand is outpacing supply.

The TPPF Take: It’s a Grinch-level shame that city officials in Canton, Michigan, are standing in the way of a Christmas tree farm.

“Two years ago, Gary and Matt Percy removed scrub brush from their property in order to plant Christmas trees for a Christmas tree farm,” explains TPPF’s Chance Weldon. “The township of Canton, Michigan, decided to fine the brothers almost $500,000—more than the property is worth—for removing ‘trees’ (defined as anything with a 3-inch wooded stem) without a permit. It makes no sense—especially when the township would benefit from the taxes brought in by a thriving Christmas tree farm in a market like this.”

Git ‘er Done

What to Know: Former Secretary of State John Kerry claims that “no country is getting the job done” on climate change, and calls for more draconian regulations and carbon taxes.

The TPPF Take: Kerry’s claims are demonstrably untrue—the U.S. is getting the job done, with innovation and ingenuity.

“The United States has cut more total carbon dioxide emissions than any other nation,” says TPPF’s Jason Isaac. “From 2008 to 2018, our energy-related emissions fell by 9% when the rest of the world increased their emissions by 17%. History shows that abundant, affordable energy and the freedom to innovate are the real solutions."

Booming

What to Know: The U.S. economy keeps defying predictions of a recession.

The TPPF Take: The U.S. economy remains strong—and even manufacturing is picking up steam.

“The current economic expansion is 10 years and five months old and showing little signs of ending,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “The good economic news comes amid widely expressed fears over negative factors, as well as major media talking heads who continue to look for opportunities to badmouth the economy as another avenue of undermining President Trump. Yet the economy keeps humming along.”
