| Dear Friend, The January 6 commission is laying out in stark relief how deep the Big Lie of election fraud goes. Witness after witness has proven that there is just no evidence of votes stolen from Donald Trump -- and he and his team knew that from the very beginning. It doesn’t matter to the GOP. Republican legislatures are leaning into the Big Lie to strangle voting rights for millions of Americans, and Republican candidates are campaigning on the same lie, promising to hand the 2024 election to Trump if they win in November. This election misconduct could spell the collapse of democracy as we know it, and that’s why Courage California is fighting for voting rights protections and to deplatform Fox “News” while using our tools -- like our Voter Guide -- to combat disinformation. But competing with the GOP campaign takes significant resources.
Since Trump started championing the Big Lie in January 2021, a staggering 19 states enacted voter restrictions based on election fraud that doesn’t actually exist.(1) All of these laws have made voting harder, from removing early voting days to imposing voter ID requirements to limiting mail-in ballot access.(2) Perhaps even worse, the constant ballyhooing of the Big Lie has chipped away at voters’ faith in the system at-large. More than 40% of people believe that Joe Biden did not legitimately win the election.(3) The more people believe that widespread election fraud exists, the less they will participate in the system. Or worse, they will support candidates who bypass the system altogether, like Doug Mastriano, candidate for Pennsylvania governor, who has promised to give Donald Trump the state’s electoral votes in the next election no matter what the results are.(4) Our democracy depends on us standing up for voter rights and beating back the Big Lie disinformation.
