Dear Progressive Reader,

This weekend we celebrate Juneteenth, the holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Texas, following the announcement of General Order No. 3 ([link removed]) by Union Army general Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865 in Galveston. Last year, President Joe Biden proclaimed it a federal holiday which will take place for the first time on June 20, 2022. This week, on our website, Rann Miller writes ([link removed]) , “The holiday is the truest Independence Day we have, so we should teach its origins.” And, as Jazmin Kreimer continues ([link removed]) in an op-ed, “It is our duty to provide Americans with the resources to learn this history. And if we can learn from each other while celebrating with barbecue and red soda in the process, then all the better.”

Hearings are continuing in Washington, D.C., on the January 6 Capitol attack and all that led up to. New revelations come out in each day of testimony. Although much of the story was told in the February 2021 impeachment hearings ([link removed]) , new evidence only seems to make the events, and the danger to our democracy, even more frightening. Cartoonist Mark Fiore illustrates ([link removed]) some of the things that were revealed last week, but more is yet to come. This past Friday was also the fiftieth anniversary of the break-in at Democratic headquarters in the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. Many of those memories are no doubt in the minds of journalists and those in Congress old enough to remember ([link removed])
this country’s previous televised hearings about a Constitutional crisis.

Although the hearings are drawing much of the national media attention, other important issues continue to reverberate in our news offices, and on our website. This week, while final announcement of the Supreme Court ruling that may overturn Roe v. Wade is still anticipated, Steph Black writes: “As activists across the country gear up to aid abortion seekers, some states have stepped up since the draft SCOTUS opinion was leaked ([link removed]) last month.” And Mike Kuhlenbeck reports ([link removed]) on efforts to organize a union at some Planned Parenthood clinics. Plus Sarah Lahm describes ([link removed]) actions by city council members in Minneapolis to privatize public safety; and Bishop Bernadel Jefferson pens an op-ed
([link removed]) from Flint, Michigan, on continued efforts in that city to protect residents from toxic pollution.

Also, Jeff Abbott has an update ([link removed]) on last week’s Summit of the Americas; and Shea Leibow talks about ([link removed]) ways in which use of the Defense Production Act could be an example for how to respond to the climate crisis and build a true “peace industrial policy.” And today is the Poor People’s and Low Wage Workers’ Assembly and Moral March on Washington and to the Polls ([link removed]) . As the Reverend William J. Barber II and Rosalyn Pelles wrote ([link removed]) in the current issue of The Progressive, “If the nation has a chance to see and hear the people we have met across this land, we believe our fellow Americans will not only see, but act. If those who face the worst this nation can offer have come together, maybe we all can unite to revive the heart of
democracy and reconstruct a society that works for all of us.”

Please keep reading, and we will keep bringing you important articles on these and other issues of our time.

Sincerely,
Norman Stockwell
