Weekend Reading
Dear John,
Happy Juneteenth! On June 19, 1865, the news finally reached Galveston, Texas that slavery had been abolished. That was more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. AFSC joins communities across the country in celebrating. One way to do that is to honor the unfinished work of abolitionists and keep up our call for a world without prisons or cages—the legacies of slavery. Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
Tell General Mills: Thank you for divesting from Israeli apartheid!: [link removed] Earlier this month, we shared the good news that General Mills was divesting its Israeli businesses—and that it would no longer source Pillsbury products from an illegal settlement. Please join us in sending a message of thanks to General Mills for taking this critical step in cutting ties with the occupation. And learn more in this interview [link removed] with AFSC's Dov Baum, who talks about our successful boycott campaign and what comes next. (Mondoweiss)
Stopping tax breaks for war profiteers: [link removed] Boeing is best known for producing commercial airplanes, but it also makes billions of dollars selling weapons of war to the Pentagon and repressive governments around the world. In Chicago, youth organizers and antiwar activists have campaigned to stop the city from providing Boeing with tax incentives—and instead invest in communities, writes youth organizer Tanvi and AFSC’s Debbie Southorn.
Local activists call for action on DACA anniversary: [link removed] This week, AFSC staff joined community members in Florida and Washington, D.C. to mark the 10-year anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. DACA has provided temporary protection from deportation to hundreds of thousands of people who came to the U.S. as children. But today, the program faces legal challenges—and Congress must provide permanent protections to DACA recipients and create a pathway to citizenship for all immigrants. (NBC Miami)
Take action: It’s time for peace with North Korea: [link removed] Thank you to everyone who called on Congress to build peace and humanitarian cooperation with North Korea! This week, hundreds of advocates from across the U.S. met virtually with members of Congress for our annual Korea Peace Advocacy week. Hearing from AFSC supporters like you is showing Washington that the public wants change. The U.S. must work toward a peace treaty with North Korea to officially end the Korean War. If you haven’t already, contact Congress today.
