Re: 2022 electoral strategy
As the 2022 elections approach, our goals are threefold: (1) to protect the significant gains our movement has made toward fair redistricting, (2) to hold Republicans accountable for their gerrymandering during the 2021-22 redistricting process, and (3) to put the pieces in place to defend American democracy. To achieve these goals, the NDRC team has come up with a list of initial Democracy Targets spanning 17 states:
13 governor races
3 state supreme court races
5 secretary of state races
1 state auditor race
25 state legislative chambers
We view each of these races as fitting into one or more of four categories: Races that will be important to future redistricting, races where we can help reelect fair-map champions (such as Democratic governors who vetoed manipulated maps), races where we have the opportunity to help defeat gerrymandering Republicans, and critical races in states where the GOP has threatened to undermine institutions important to our democracy.
Execution of this strategy depends on several factors. Media reports indicate that 2022 will be a challenging political cycle for the party in the White House, with high Republican enthusiasm and accompanying fundraising. Therefore, a key factor in our success will be the level of engagement among the NDRC’s supporters.
