My name is Fred Guttenberg and I am a father of two children, Jesse and Jaime. Ahead of Father’s Day tomorrow, I am writing to you because we need to talk about what’s killing our children: America’s gun violence epidemic.

On February 14, 2018, my 14-year-old daughter, Jaime Guttenberg, was murdered by a man armed with an assault weapon, alongside 13 other children and three of their teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. My son, Jesse, survived the shooting and lives with the permanent scars of having heard his sister get shot.
This Father’s Day, I’m missing Jaime. And I am asking dads and Americans everywhere to sign onto my letter demanding that Congress take action to finally protect our families: [[link removed]?]

Gun violence has become the leading cause of death for children in America. According to one study, a child or teen is killed with a gun every 2 hours and 34 minutes in this country. These aren’t just statistics. They are the empty seats at graduation ceremonies, family vacations, and Father’s Day BBQs.

EXCITING NEWS: We Updated the Gun Store Transparency Project — the Largest Database of ATF Inspection Reports Available to the Public

We’re Fighting to Implement Microstamping Technology in New Jersey!

Microstamping technology [[link removed]] imprints a unique marking, a “microstamp,” on the bullet casing of a firearm, which enables law enforcement to identify shooters and gun traffickers. It’s a revolutionary crime-solving technology that can help end devastating cycles of violence, but a bill to require its implementation in New Jersey has been stalled by gun lobby obstruction.

In efforts to move this life-saving legislation forward, our Policy team traveled to New Jersey to host a live demonstration of handgun microstamping [[link removed]] alongside state senators, the governor’s and attorney general’s offices, and more.

“We have the technology,” Brady Policy Vice President Christian Heyne explained [[link removed]] , noting that microstamping has been available for decades. “We simply need the courage to put things like this in place so that we can prevent tragedies from happening.”

We recently helped pass handgun microstamping laws in New York and California. We intend to build on this progress in New Jersey and in state legislatures across the country.

In response to the massacres in Uvalde, TX, and Buffalo, NY, more than 200 leading Hollywood writers, directors, and producers have signed onto Brady’s open letter and pledge [[link removed]] to model responsible gun use on-screen. The list of signatories includes Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, J.J. Abrams,
Bill Lawrence, Jimmy Kimmel, Judd Apatow, and more. The pledge is a part of Brady’s new #ShowYourSafety program [[link removed]] , which engages the creative community in the movement against gun violence.

As part of our pledge, major film and industry professionals will lead cultural change by modeling firearm safety on screen.
“As America’s storytellers, our goal is primarily to entertain, but we also acknowledge that stories have the power to effect change. Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety.”

This is a big deal. We know that America's culture-makers have a deep influence in how we think of ourselves, what we value, and how we act. We can empower our nation’s artists and storytellers to model norms and visions that guide us to a safer America free of gun violence.
