Happy Father’s Day weekend, John!
I consider myself blessed beyond measure to have an endless list of fathers whom I love and admire.
My father, Tom, was a World War II Veteran and a Lincoln City Councilmember who led our community with an open heart and an open mind. He raised five children with all the love in the world and instilled in us the fundamental belief that when we all put our heads and our hearts together, there is nothing we can’t conquer.
He passed away when I was young, and I miss him every day. My father was the hardest-working man I’ve ever known, and when I’m on the floor of the Legislature or speaking at a rally, he is the voice in the back of my mind telling me to go forward in my fight with compassion.
My darling husband, Loel, is the light of my life, and the most amazing father to our three beautiful children! Even in the midst of legislative and campaign chaos, Loel is the calm, loving, and steady rock that anchors our family.
Loel is my law partner, most trusted ally, and the strongest supporter of every venture our children have pursued. He is somehow able to move mountains to get all five of us to the family dinner table at the end of a crazy day, and has navigated our family through tough times and made hard sacrifices to help our family thrive.
Raising a family with Loel has shown me that being a parent requires sacrifice, but it shouldn’t require choosing between a day off and putting food on the table.
Many of my colleagues in work and in the Legislature balance the long hours, extended sessions, and trips across the state between raising families of their own — all while making sure they never miss a single soccer game on the weekends. Working with incredible dads warms my heart — and it motivates me even more to fight for a better future for our kids.
Being a dad or a father figure isn’t easy, though — especially without resources like paid family leave to help fathers put being a parent first. Our working parents need support to raise their families, and they deserve people who will fight for them to get the help they’re asking for.
John, it’s time we put our families first — and I’m ready to ensure Congress delivers on things like paid family leave and affordable child care. Will you help support my fight this Father’s Day weekend?
