Jack,

Today, the Senate passed a bill 97-2 to fund compensation for 9/11 first responders—not for now, not for a few years, but for the rest of their lives.

I’m proud, but today is not a celebration. It is a deep sigh of relief.

We have lost so many of our heroes, and sadly, more will continue to get sick, and more will die—and each one is a tragedy. Today, finally, their government stood by them.

As politicians, we are here to serve the public. We work for the men and women who answered the call of duty when our nation asked, whose selfless service put them in harm’s way and forever changed their lives and the lives of their families.

It’s about the people—9/11 first responders themselves, their families, and their tireless advocates—who have come back to Washington time and again to argue their case, which they never should have had to do.

It never should have taken this long to pass this bill and make it permanent.

I’m deeply grateful to the men and women whose constant activism was the driving force behind seeing this legislation passed, and I look forward to President Trump signing it into law.

Thank you,

—Kirsten
