Treasonous and "anti-American" – no, those weren't the words used to describe the violent political coup staged by the far right on January 6th, 2021. Those were the words House Minority Leader, Kevin McCarthy, used to describe the committee investigating the hateful extremists who stormed our nation's Capitol and the leaders responsible for inciting the mob.

The evidence laid out during the January 6th hearings should be troubling to each and every American. What is even more troubling, however, is the fact that a hearing to investigate an attempted political coup during the certification of a democratically elected president needed to happen in the first place. The fact is, if we did not have a Democratic majority in the House, this investigation never would have happened. Kevin McCarthy would have made sure of that.

House GOP leadership has made it clear that they want zero accountability for the violence that we witnessed on January 6th, 2021.

When the House was first gearing up to vote on the formation of a committee to investigate this insurrection, Kevin McCarthy called the effort "counterproductive" and "shortsighted." Then he tried to undermine its legitimacy by appointing two known Trumpers who were actively supporting the effort to overturn the 2020 Election. And despite the overwhelming evidence, McCarthy has continued to characterize this deadly attack – where at least 7 people lost their lives – as "no big deal" and a "typical tourist visit" to the Capitol.

Of course, earlier this month former president Trump endorsed Minority Leader McCarthy for reelection. Maybe that was the price for undermining our democracy.

But we know the value of our democracy and the value of truth – no matter how fragile they can be. We must be willing to stand and fight for both, and that's exactly what Suzan does.
