John,
Before Donald Trump was able to pass his “big, beautiful tax cut” in 2017 he needed every single Republican Senator on board. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) reportedly withheld his yes vote until he got a business-friendly tax break for “pass through” entities, which mostly benefits the richest 1%.[1]
When asked about this provision in the Trump-GOP tax law, Senator Johnson retorted, “Now, did my business benefit? Sure. Did some of my donor businesses? Sure.”[2]
Johnson hasn’t just benefited from the Trump-GOP tax law. Since he’s been in office, he’s seen his personal wealth double.[2] And, two Wisconsin billionaire families who contributed a combined $20 million to groups backing Johnson’s reelection in 2016, got a total of $80 million in tax breaks in 2018 alone just from the loophole Johnson got inserted in the tax law. At that rate their combined total tax breaks may be worth half-a-billion dollars over the next 8 years!!![3]
Ron Johnson is working hard to help one group: his wealthy donors. Wisconsinites deserve to have a Senator that puts the needs of working families above the wants of the ultra-rich. Pitch in now to help us bring our latest infographic below to Wisconsin today!
These billionaire campaign contributions led the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to dub the billionaire Uihlein family “the Koch brothers of Wisconsin.”[4]
Senator Johnson isn’t shy about personally benefiting from his own votes while in office, nor that he fought to include this provision enjoyed by the richest 1% in the Trump tax scam. It’s up to us to shine a spotlight on the policies Johnson has championed while in office, the campaign donors he's helping out, and how everyday working people are being left behind.
