John —

Last year, Juneteenth became an official holiday at the federal level. It is a chance to celebrate and honor how Black Americans have contributed to this country, recognize the shackles of the past, and recommit to the fight for Black liberation.

The fight for equity and justice is a long one, starting even before General Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas almost 157 years ago to announce that the Civil War had ended. But days like Juneteenth remind us how important it is to keep up our work.

So, from me and everyone on Team Lightfoot, to you, your family, friends, and neighbors: This Sunday, we hope you have a wonderful Juneteenth!

Thank you!

— Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot
