Post-9/11 Veterans Service Bonus

9/11 Veterans Service Bonus

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) has a long history of awarding service bonuses to Minnesota Veterans who served in America’s wars. Starting in 1919 after World War I, through World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, and now the Global War on Terrorism. MDVA recognizes the sacrifices and courage Minnesotans took to defend our country.

The 2022 Legislature passed and Governor Walz signed the first-ever Veterans Omnibus Bill that included funding for a service bonus payable to eligible Veterans who served from 9/11/01 to 8/30/21. MDVA is honored to facilitate this program for eligible Veterans, currently serving service members, or Veterans' beneficiaries.

The application period will begin on July 7, 2022. The last day to apply is June 30, 2024, unless the funds have been exhausted prior to June 30, 2024.

Share Your Post-9/11 Story

This retrospective study of the Minnesota experience since 9/11 will chronicle individual service members and state units deployed overseas as well as a range of home-front stories. Minnesotans were in the towers, planes and Pentagon on September 11, among the first boots on the ground in Afghanistan and some of the very last to leave in 2021.

Minnesotans also served in long and repeated deployments to Iraq and across the greater Middle East. Closer to home, communities came together in new ways to support the families of those deployed and welcomed immigrants as they had done before. Together, these stories start to stitch together a shared state history in America’s longest war.

The resulting retrospective will be published as a PDF in the summer of 2023 and be made available to the public without charge. Published copies will be provided to schools and libraries.

"This is a joint effort of the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, Minnesota Military & Veterans Museum and MDVA’s 9/11 & Global War on Terrorism Task Force [ [link removed] ]. It is inspired by much earlier state efforts to draft definitive histories in the aftermath of earlier conflicts (Civil War, Great War, etc) and is undertaken for the benefit of future generations."

Mental Health First Aid Class June 22

Mental Health First aid

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adults. You’ll build skills and confidence you need to reach out and provide initial support to those who are struggling. You’ll also learn how to help connect them to appropriate support.

Next class: Wednesday, June 22, from 9 a.m. -3 p.m. To register email: [email protected].

This class will be held virtually and requires two hours of self-paced pre-coursework before attending the five hour instructor led, virtual portion of the class.

Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay

To thank those Minnesotans who worked on the frontlines during the COVID-19 peacetime emergency, Gov. Tim Walz signed Frontline Worker Payments into law April 29, 2022, enabling those workers to apply for Frontline Worker Pay.

Eligibility

Eligibility is based on both work requirements and job sector. See frontlinepay.mn.gov [ [link removed] ] for an explanation of the requirements, the most up-to-date information and helpful resources. Also, sign up to receive alerts about Frontline Worker Pay via email.

Where to apply, timeline

It is anticipated that applications will be open June 8 through July 22, 2022. These dates are subject to change. Applications can be submitted at frontlinepay.mn.gov [ [link removed] ]. The 45-day application period will be followed by a 15-day period to allow for appeals from those whose applications were denied. After verification and processing of the applications are completed, payments are anticipated in early fall. All applications will move through the process at the same time and payments will be forwarded for processing together.

Pride Month

pride month 2

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) recognizes June as Pride Month to commemorate the struggle for civil rights and celebrate the impact of LGBTQIA+ individuals around the world.

As shared by Gov. Walz in his 2022 Proclamation of Pride Month [ [link removed] ], this year marks the 53rd anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising against police brutality toward the LGBTQIA+ communities and the ninth anniversary of Minnesota legalizing same-sex marriage by legislative vote. He stated that this is a time to recommit ourselves to creating a state where our LGBTQIA+ community members are safe and thriving.

MDVA Promoting Free Gun Locks via PSAs

On Monday, May 2, MDVA began airing Public Service Announcements [ [link removed] ] (PSAs) on Twin Cities FOX 9 TV to encourage gun owners to lock their weapons with a gun lock to help prevent Veteran suicide. These 30-second PSAs will run through June.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs [ [link removed] ], a locked gun can mean the difference between a tragic outcome and a life saved for someone in crisis. Though Veterans are well-versed in firearm safety, all gun owners should understand that during emotional or stressful times, delaying access to a gun could mean the difference between life and death. Gun locks can prevent someone in crisis from tragically taking their own life.

To reduce these preventable tragedies, MDVA is offering free gun locks. *To request a gun lock, please email **[email protected] with your name and address.* This information will not be shared; requests are confidential.
