Dear friends,

When British journalist Dom Philipps and his Brazilian guide, the indigenous communities expert Bruno Pereira, went missing in the Amazon, it took a total of ten days to confirm their deaths – after a suspect admitted burying their bodies.

Ten days of confusion, in which
the measures taken by the government to find the two men were both slow and extremely inadequate, the police investigation was belated and laborious and the search operations were chaotic and disorganised.

Ten days during which President Jair Bolsonaro made several shocking comments that contributed to the confusion surrounding the case.

We are not just sad at the news of the deaths of this reporter and this defender of indigenous minority rights. We are also angry and outraged by Jair Bolsonaro’s attitude. Ever since taking office as president in January 2019, he has denigrated journalists who annoyed him, he has tried to smear them and to render them vulnerable.

Dom and Bruno were doing vital work for our societies by reporting on deforestation and attacks against the Amazon’s indigenous peoples.
Without journalists who are able to report freely and independently, we will not be able to respond to environmental problems.
