I’m more convinced than ever that this horrific assault against our country must not go unanswered. That’s the unmistakable takeaway for anyone who was watching on Thursday night as the nonpartisan January 6th Committee presented its case – backed by more than 1,000 sworn statements – against Trump and his cronies’ attempt to overturn the 2020 election.
Among the new revelations:
- Trump’s tweets targeting then-VP Pence shouted into a megaphone before the crowd.
- New footage of insurrectionists who were in the mob claiming that Trump wanted them there.
- Members of Congress seeking a preemptive presidential pardon for their actions.
What many suspected was made clear on Thursday night: former President Trump and MAGA Republicans played a direct role in planning, promoting, and paying for a horrific, violent attack on our country and our freedom.
EVEN MORE FRIGHTENING: without swift accountability
(which will only come if people like you and me demand it), the same sinister forces behind January 6th will attempt once again to sabotage and overturn our elections in 2022, 2024, 2026 – any time the outcome doesn't go their way. Even as I write you, they’re laying the groundwork to do so.
The urgent action needed at this key moment is to wake up millions of people to what you and I already know well: that our democracy is still under threat like never before and that our actions in the immediate months ahead will determine whether it survives for the next generation.
To keep the drumbeat of citizen outrage and accountability going and growing, Common Cause activists will deliver over 100,000 signatures from fellow members to major news networks’ headquarters this month – urging these stations to continue broadcasting these historic and hugely important hearings in prime time.
But John, the truth alone won’t spur change unless we make it so. That’s why, in addition to demanding that networks increase their prime time coverage, we’re stepping up our already ambitious Protect the Vote 2022 midterm effort. We’re launching a major public alert initiative spotlighting what the Committee has uncovered, paired with a massive mobilization to ensure it can never happen again.
The fact is: we likely only have a few short months left to act. If Trump Republicans control either chamber of Congress come 2023, they will immediately shut down any investigation that might implicate them.
