My name is Jon Lowy, Chief Counsel at Brady. For 20 years, I have argued in courts across the country to reduce gun violence. So know that I'm serious when I say that the Supreme Court is about to hand down the most consequential decision on the Second Amendment in years – and this conservative court could likely side with the gun lobby.
The last time that the Supreme Court heard a major Second Amendment case (over a decade ago) they sided with the NRA’s bastardized interpretation that an individual has a right to possess a firearm for self-defense, far from the well-regulated militia the Framers intended. For the first time in American history, the Second Amendment became weaponized for gun lobby opponents of life-saving gun laws. And, John, their next case could be even more dangerous.
Since then, gun violence and gun death have been on the rise – including last year’s record breaking numbers. But the NRA still wants more guns on the streets and even fewer restrictions. In fact, they’re spending millions of dollars to make sure that their guns-everywhere vision becomes the law of the land.
They’re pushing for permitless carry across the country – meaning anyone could carry a weapon, anywhere, without a permit, background check, or training. While the NRA claims that “liberal elites” are trying to take guns, they are taking away people’s right to safety.
There is only one outcome if the NRA wins, John: More gun deaths.
The NRA’s guns everywhere agenda has gone far enough and we can’t afford to let them win this time. We don’t have the gun lobby backing us with millions of dollars, so we’re counting on grassroots activists to use their voices to fight.
