Dear Friends,

The Biden Administration is moving, slowly but surely, to transfer or provide a trial for the 37 men who remain in Guantanamo prison. Many of those who remain were tortured. Working closely with human rights allies, the faith community provides the moral witness needed to close Guantanamo and, in the past, has been called on to provide support for resettling transferred detainees in other countries.

You’ve heard many times from NRCAT how the military commissions trial system has been ineffective. One way to move forward for the men with active cases in the military commissions is for their legal teams to negotiate plea deals resulting in time-served, dismissal, release and/or transfer. For some of the detainees, the path to being tried or transferred is much less evident without an act of Congress.

By making a financial contribution to NRCAT today, you can ensure that NRCAT will continue to meet with members of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees as the National Defense Authorization Act is currently being written. NRCAT and our allies are advocating for provisions in the NDAA that lift roadblocks Congress has placed in past years on transfers from Guantanamo, including shamefully blocking medical transfers to the U.S. with the aging and traumatized men in this prison.

Thanks to our June $30,000 challenge match, your support today gives NRCAT the ability to share our “Close Guantanamo” message through legislative action alerts, local educational events throughout the year, and social media. Together, 20 years after its opening, we hope to finally close this symbol of U.S. torture that is the Guantanamo prison.

Sincerely,

Ron Stief
Executive Director
