Record Green wins across London this May

This May saw a record number of Greens elected to London’s councils.

We broke through in Croydon, Newham and Tower Hamlets and have Green councillors again in Hackney.

We now have 18 Green councillors on 7 councils and are the opposition in Richmond, Newham and Islington.

Unfortunately some of our existing councillors did not get re-elected. We will continue to work hard for our communities wherever we are.

Congratulations to all elected councillors and a massive thank you to all members and supporters for helping make this happen, however large or small your contribution!

Local party focus: Hackney

We recently caught up with Chesca Walton who is leading their upcoming by-election in the De Beauvoir Ward:

"Following the resignation of a Labour councillor, there will be a by-election in De Beauvoir ward on 7 July. Hackney Green Party has selected local housing campaigner and environmental activist Tyrone Scott to be our candidate for the by-election.

"Tyrone stood as our parliamentary candidate in Hackney South and Shoreditch gaining nearly 3,000 votes! One of the best results anywhere in the country. Tyrone has a track record of standing up for residents in Hackney and achieving positive change for the borough.

"He was also part of the inspiring campaign to get a permanent home in Hackney for Sistah Space - a community non-profit initiative which provides domestic abuse services for African heritage women and girls.

"We have been out in the De Beauvoir Ward campaigning hard, with Tyrone already getting lots of recognition on the doorstep and Green posters slowly appearing in windows across the ward.

"It's been great to talk to residents about local issues and understand the challenges they're facing. However, Labour have also been out canvassing regularly and is looking worried given our recent success, so we need you to join us! Every single door we can knock on between now and the 7th July is a potential vote for Tyrone, so if you can spare just a couple of hours of your time that could make all the difference!

"We are canvassing every Saturday and Sunday, and Tuesday and Thursday evenings, you can find out times and locations by going to our events page."

Their next action day is on 18 June and starts at Cafe Route on Kingsland Basin at 10:30am. If you would like to attend or get involved more generally then email Chesca ([email protected]) for more information.

Local Party Focus: Kingston

We spoke to Dan Falchikov who is working on the by-election campaign in New Malden Village

"Things are hotting up in the postponed New Malden Village election with postal votes being sent out.

"Green candidate Lucy Howard is standing in a cooperative team with local independents who won the next door ward in May. Lucy was delighted to welcome Green Peer Jenny Jones on Saturday to meet postal voters face-to-face.

Lucy said, “Thanks to Jenny and the other London Greens who came along. The weather was great, as was the really positive reception.

It’s going to be close between our cooperative team and the ruling Lib Dems who already have a huge council majority. People recognise three more Lib Dems won’t make the difference that electing a Green would."

If you can help in the next ten days please do come along – New Malden is 20mins from Waterloo with frequent trains and you’ll be assured of a warm welcome.”

Their next action day is on 18 June and starts on Rodney Road at 10am. If you would like to attend or get involved more generally then email Sharron Summner ([email protected]) for more information.

Calling all General Election Candidates!

We all know that a General Election could happen at anytime.

That is why we are starting the process to select General Election candidates so we are ready if a snap election occurs.

If you feel you are suitable to be a public face of the Green Party, please email Malcolm Powell (Joint Elections Coordinator) at [email protected]. We can then help local parties match candidates to constituencies as needed.

New Field Organiser: Ash Haynes

Ash Haynes will be starting as the new Field Organsier for London. Here's what she had to say about her exciting new role:

"Hi, I'm Ash, the new Field Organiser for London! I've just taken over from Elfrede and will be working broadly with the local parties she was previously working with.

"I was previously Field Organiser for the Eastern Region, where I helped local parties successfully defend all the defence seats in the region and make gains, including breakthroughs onto two new councils.

"I've picked up lots of useful skills and experience in that role which I'm hoping to bring to the role. I'm not just passionate about getting Greens elected, but also about building strong teams and local parties and making the experience of campaigning fun and inclusive.

"I've also been a councillor in Norwich for nine years and was elected again last year to a different ward where the Greens form the official opposition. I look after the shadow portfolio of housing for the group and represent a diverse, interesting ward.

I've also previously held Executive roles with Norwich Green Party, including party and elections coordinator, and was co-chair of the Young Greens. Outside of all this, I'm a mum to two kids.

"I'm really looking forward to working with you all!"

If you would like to contact Ash then email her at [email protected]
