Enforcing Anti-Abortion Laws Is Neither Pro-Life Nor Pro-Choice. It’s Rule of Law. – “The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion,” wrote Justice Samuel Alito in the leaked draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. “[Roe v. Wade] and [Planned Parenthood v. Casey] arrogated that authority. We now overrule those decisions and return that authority to the people and their elected representatives.” That is where that authority belongs. This issue, therefore, is neither pro-life nor pro-choice. This isn’t about politics or party. Demanding that prosecutors do their job is simply the rule of law. Heritage Expert: Thomas Jipping
Social Security Disability Program May Appear “Solvent” but It’s a Bad Deal for Workers and a Poor Program for Individuals With Disabilities – Unlike Social Security’s Old-Age and Survivors Insurance program for retirees, which has a highly predictable financial outlook, the financial well-being of Social Security’s Disability Insurance program varies widely from year to year. Drastic yearly swings in its projected solvency occur because the system hasn’t stuck to its mission of providing benefits for people who are physically or mentally unable to work. Instead, it has allowed many individuals to misuse it as both an unemployment and early-retirement program. Heritage Expert: Rachel Greszler
After an Assassination Attempt, Protesters Come to Kavanaugh’s Home - A week after an assassination attempt on Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a small group of 17 protesters made their way to Chevy Chase, Maryland on Wednesday to march to his home as well as the home of Chief Justice John Roberts, something they have done each week for more than a month. The event follows the murder attempt on June 8, when a California man was arrested after telling authorities he was going to try to kill Kavanaugh and was present in Kavanaugh’s neighborhood. The protesters gathered at a small market about 10 minutes away from Kavanaugh’s house. When The Daily Signal asked them if they felt protesting in front of the justices’ homes had contributed to the assassination attempt, they were adamant that the two were unrelated. The Unsustainable Costs of President Biden’s Climate Agenda - One of President Biden’s first actions in office was to recommit the United States to the Paris Agreement on global warming. This Backgrounder details the harmful economic implications of doing so by modeling a theoretically efficient carbon tax designed to achieve the Administration’s emissions reduction targets. While the Paris Agreement’s climate impact will be minimal at best, it will impose significant costs on American families and businesses. Instead of implementing an agenda that will decrease Americans’ access to energy and cost trillions, President Biden and Congress should pursue a policy agenda that advances economic freedom, rejects symbolic but ineffective climate policies, and reduces barriers to innovation and economic opportunity. Tough times for the Army on its birthday - June 14 marked the U.S. Army’s 247th birthday. Over these years, the Army has witnessed periods of both challenge and success. After World War I, the Army’s budget plummeted, and it teetered on the edge of irrelevance. Conversely, in the aftermath of Desert Storm’s 1991 victory over Iraq, it was praised for its incredible competence. Today, faced with harmful progressive agendas, budgets that have failed to keep pace with inflation, and a recruiting challenge unprecedented in the era of the all-volunteer force, it appears the Army is in for yet another tough stretch. Puberty Blockers, Trans Hormones Connected To Rising Teen Suicide, Report Finds – Easier access to puberty blockers and transgender hormones is connected to rising teen suicide rates, a report from the Heritage Foundation released Monday said. At a minimum, the results presented in this Backgrounder demonstrate that efforts to lower legal barriers for minors to receive cross-sex medical interventions do not reduce suicide rates and likely lead to higher rates among young people in states that adopt those changes. Heritage’s study found that after 2010, when puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones became widely available in America, suicide rates rose in states that had provided minors with easier access to them. By 2020, states with easier access to puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones saw 3.5 more suicides per 100,000 amongst people age 12 to 23 than those with more difficult access.Heritage Expert: Jay Greene
Federal Reserve’s Interest Rate Hikes Are Too Little, TooLate - President Biden’s Federal Reserve has utterly failed the working and middle class. Instead of acting to preserve the value of their earnings and savings, the Fed has robbed them of trillions of dollars in purchasing power through the hidden tax of inflation, the method by which the Fed has financed trillions of dollars in unfunded federal spending. These interest rate increases are simply too little, too late. The time to act was over a year ago and the Fed spent that time adding liquidity to provide Congress and President Biden with spending money, causing inflation and setting the nation on course for a recession. To restore price stability and long-run economic growth, the Fed needs to act aggressively and cut off the ‘free’ money to Congress and the president. Heritage Experts: EJ Antoni and Joel Griffith
