On January 6, 2021, we watched an attempted coup in real time, as cable news and social media footage showed how perilously close we came to mob rule overturning the results of the November election. It was frightening, and it felt surreal. The courage and bravery shown that day by the law enforcement officers who stood their ground to protect our democracy should never be forgotten.

But we must also get to the bottom of the events of January 6 and what led up to that treasonous siege on the Capitol building. As bad as we knew it was at the time, I'm still appalled by the footage and testimony the House committee has shared so far.

I'm even more disgusted by the depths of cowardice we're seeing – the number of administration officials and members of Congress who knew Donald Trump was lying and attacking our democracy, but who didn't have the guts to contradict him in public.

Worst of all? Republicans around the country have vowed to shut down the investigation if they take control of the House. And you can bet Alek Skarlatos will be first in line to protect his idol Donald Trump.
