Gun violence has taken our friends, family, and loved ones.
Dear John ,
For so many of us here in Chicago, gun violence has taken our friends, family, and loved ones. Chicago is a city of survivors. Survivors who've watched the same leaders deliver the same failed solutions year after year.
We’ve had enough. That’s why today, I’m proud to share a video and letter from 50 gun violence prevention advocates and survivors who are ready for new leadership in IL-7.
Since the start of this year, we have already witnessed over 265 mass shootings in the United States, with little to nothing done by our leaders in Congress.
We can't wait any longer for bold action; we need to deliver it now. As a gun violence survivor and someone who led Illinois’ largest gun violence prevention nonprofit and served on President Biden's transition team’s task force on gun violence prevention, I have the experience to take this problem on.
Signers of this letter include leaders across Chicago’s gun violence prevention space including the 5900 Block Club, Black Women Organizing for Power, Engaged Berwyn, Fight Now Chicago, Hope Dealers, Indivisible, the League of Women Voters, LINK Unlimited Scholars, Mothers OnA Mission28, Neighbors Who Vote, No More Foundation, The Nickolas Lee Foundation, and Youth Committee 4 Change. These leaders have firsthand experience with gun violence and understand why we desperately need leaders who are going to deliver bold solutions. In their letter, they made it crystal clear:
“Kina’s years of work combating gun violence make clear that she not only gets it — but that she is the leader that this crisis and this moment demands. Kina understands that the movement needs to center victims and to be led by survivors.”
