Dear Readers,
When I was in elementary school, I started a newspaper about my family of five. Hand-written and illustrated, it was my first foray into journalism — and I quickly realized how time-consuming and difficult the work was.
Decades later, I’m still devoted to the principles I stumbled onto that day in my childhood kitchen — keeping people informed and accurately reporting on the issues that matter to the community. Now, I do it from the Poynter Institute instead of on the kitchen counter (and while my writing has improved, my illustrations haven’t).
My team and I are working to provide you with ethical, fact-based journalism that you rely on every day to help navigate your world. Whether you’re a daily Tom Jones junkie, a digital disciple of Ren LaForme’s, an apostle of female leaders like Mel Grau, a business trendspotter like Rick Edmonds or a local news champion like Kristen Hare, we hope to keep you inspired and informed. Our nonprofit newsroom aims to make a difference in the lives of the journalists we teach and the citizens they serve.
Today is Giving Tuesday, a global day of philanthropy - or as I call it, “Giving Newsday.” Whichever name you prefer, please make a donation to Poynter today.
Your gift will help us provide you with a better-informed community and a healthy democracy. This #GivingNewsDay, invest in unbiased and independent journalism that matters. This news can’t wait.
With gratitude,

Barbara Allen
Editor, Poynter.org
P.S. Don’t keep #GivingNewsDay all to yourself! Celebrate with friends and colleagues by helping us spread the word and forwarding this email.
