I’m proud to share with you, John, that this morning, the Judiciary Committee – which I chair – voted to advance the nomination of Steve Dettelbach to the Senate floor.
This is an important development for a number of reasons.
Since 2015, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) has been without a Senate-confirmed director thanks to gun lobbyists who want the position to remain empty. That must change.
And now, while we move to take legislative action to combat the scourge of gun violence plaguing our country, we need a strong, capable leader at ATF who is ready to enforce the laws already on the books.
Steve Dettelbach has already received overwhelming support from a bipartisan group of former Justice Department officials, law enforcement organizations, and more. I have faith that he’s going to be an effective director who is ready to take on the serious challenges we face today.
We can’t allow the agency primarily tasked with tackling gun violence to remain without a Senate-confirmed director. So please:
Will you sign on now to urge the Senate to quickly confirm Mr. Dettelbach?
Thanks for your support in this important matter.
My best,
Dick Durbin
