Cultural Survival Staff visiting grant partner Radio Nimlajacoc, a Q'eqchi' community radio station located in Cobán, Guatemala. Serving the community since 2012, Radio Nimlajacoc ran on a generator because there is no access to electricity in their area. Today, they are a solar-powered radio, decreasing their carbon footprint and increasing their on air hours.

2019 was a significant year for us!
* The Community Media Grants Project provides opportunities for International Indigenous radio stations to strengthen their broadcast infrastructure and systems, and provide training opportunities in journalism, broadcasting, audio editing, technical skills and more to Indigenous community radio journalists around the world. Over the past year, with your support, we funded 35 media projects in 9 countries, totaling $210,000.

* The Keepers of the Earth Fund is a small grants fund that supports Indigenous Peoples’ community advocacy and development projects. We awarded 20 projects in 10 countries, totaling $79,864.

Also in 2019, together, we:
* Supported 6 groups of Indigenous Community Media Youth Fellows from Nicaragua, Colombia, Guatemala and Ecuador in building capacity in media, journalism, radio production, advocacy skills, technical abilities, and regional networking.

* Submitted 8 reports on Indigenous Peoples' rights violations to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) and UN Treaty Bodies in El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and the U.S.

* Trained 80+ Indigenous women in radio production and radio journalism.

* Released over 160 Indigenous Rights Radio programs in 69 countries to 1000+ stations on Indigenous rights topics, such as Indigenous languages, Indigenous women’s rights, food sovereignty, and Sustainable Development Goals.

* Hosted artists representing over 4,500 artisans from 30 countries and generated over $493,358 for the economic empowerment of Indigenous communities through our Cultural Survival Bazaars.
