On June 13, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an incredible package of abortion access legislation into law—and every blue state which hasn’t already done the same should immediately follow suit.
The six bills aim to address legal concerns in the wake of Justice Alito’s draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and in anticipation of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.
Among other measures, the legislation bolsters protections for New York residents and out-of-state patients traveling for abortion care, shields abortion providers from extradition, and protects the rights of those seeking gender-affirming health care in the state.

With each passing day, we get closer to a Supreme Court decision that will forever change the trajectory of reproductive freedom and autonomy in the United States. If those charged with protecting our fundamental human rights at the nation’s highest court won’t protect us—and the U.S. Senate can’t gather enough votes to codify Roe in federal law—blue state legislatures need to take things into their own hands.
As it currently stands, 22 states have laws that could restrict abortion—including thirteen states that will immediately ban all or nearly all abortions if Roe is overturned. We need safe havens for abortion access across the country, and we can’t do that without blue states.
Some states, like Connecticut, have already enacted legislation to ensure abortion access and protect those visiting from out-of-state to seek care. We need every blue state to get on board and pass good copycat laws so people have a better chance of getting the health care they need once the Supreme Court rules.
