Wild Salmon Center News - June 2022

YOU CAN BE A BRISTOL BAY HERO
On May 31, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency kicked off a five-week public comment period on its proposed plan to protect Bristol Bay under the Clean Water Act. This gives us a rare and powerful opportunity to show EPA that the world still stands with Bristol Bay after so many years of fighting Pebble Mine. EPA’s comment period ends on July 5, giving us mere weeks to rally alongside Bristol Bay Tribes and communities—and hopefully end the threat of Pebble Mine forever. With Bristol Bay’s fishing fleet now heading out to sea, these communities need our voices more than ever.

MEET THE SCIENTISTS WHO GUIDE OUR WORK
Wild Salmon Center has become the most influential salmon conservation organization across the Pacific Rim. Our effectiveness results from our clarity of strategy, our credibility, and the outcomes we achieve. Using science as the basis of our work is a core value, and that focus has been one of the key factors driving our success. WSC’s science program is guided by a Science Advisory Board which includes leading scientists from the United States, Canada, and Russia.

THANK YOU FOR SHOWING UP FOR THE TILLAMOOK RAINFOREST
For the past 10 weeks, we rallied Oregon forest lovers to speak up on behalf of a plan to protect the Tillamook for the next 70 years. So many of you pitched in to sign a federal petition calling for strong conservation in the Tillamook during a public comment period. THANK YOU to all of the hikers, fly fishers, trail runners, fishing guides, surfers, and businesses out there who gave testimonials, wrote letters to the editor, and signed a business petition as well. Now that the comment period has closed, we await a response from NOAA Fisheries and recommendations for moving forward.

WELCOME STACEY DETWILER
Our new Oregon Policy Manager has a history of helping the state’s forestry laws catch up with its neighbors. In 2017, her leadership led to a new state law prohibiting suction dredge mining. She led a coalition of landowners, grassroots organizations, and nonprofits that defeated the proposed Jordan Cove LNG pipeline project in southern Oregon, and partnered with Wild Salmon Center's Bob Van Dyk and others to develop and secure passage of 2022’s monumental Private Forest Accord. Now, she joins our Oregon team working to make Oregon a true conservation leader.
